A ZinVolt home battery that you plug into a socket yourself is set by default to a maximum output of 800 W. This keeps usage simple and limits the risk of overloading an existing power circuit. Do you have a separate circuit for the battery? Then the available power can be increased after verification.

For the ZinVolt Power and ZinVolt Base, the maximum output can be increased to 2,000 W. The ZinVolt Core has an inverter capacity of 3,680 W. With professional installation via a disconnect switch, the installer ensures that the system is correctly connected, set up, and tested.

In this article, we explain the difference between 800 W, 2,000 W, and 3,680 W. You will read why a separate circuit is needed and how to request higher power via the ZinVolt app.

Capacity and power are not the same

With a home battery, capacity and power are often confused. However, these terms mean different things.

  • Capacity in kWh indicates how much energy the battery can store.
  • Power in W indicates how much energy the battery can deliver or absorb at one moment.

A battery with more storage capacity can therefore provide energy for longer. Higher power ensures that the battery can cover a larger portion of the household's electricity consumption at the same time.

For example, if your home uses 1,500 W while the battery supplies a maximum of 800 W, the remaining 700 W comes from the electricity grid. If the maximum output is set to 2,000 W, the battery can cover the entire consumption of 1,500 W, as long as sufficient energy is available in the battery.

How much power do ZinVolt home batteries have?

The stated power ratings are maximum values. The battery does not continuously deliver full power. The actual output depends on household electricity consumption, the selected energy mode, battery status, and electrical connection.

The ZinVolt Power and Base are plug & play home batteries

The ZinVolt Power and ZinVolt Base are designed as plug & play home batteries. You place the battery according to the manual in a suitable location. Then you connect it directly to a grounded wall socket and link the system to the ZinVolt app.

The included P1 dongle reads the smart meter. This allows the battery to see how much electricity the home uses, how much energy is fed back, and when there is room to charge or discharge the battery.

With a normal connection to an existing power circuit, the maximum output is set to 800 W by default. This enables a low-threshold connection without immediately using the maximum power of the inverter.

Always connect the battery directly to the wall socket. Do not use an extension cord, power strip, or multi-plug adapter.

Why is a separate circuit needed for 2,000 W?

A power circuit is protected from the meter box by a circuit breaker. With a standard 16A circuit, this breaker trips when too much current flows from the meter box to the circuit.

A home battery also works in the other direction. The battery can add power to the same circuit via the wall socket. If other devices are also connected to that circuit, the power from the battery can be combined with power from the meter box.

The circuit breaker primarily sees how much current flows through the circuit from the meter box. It does not always see the full amount of current available further down the wiring. As a result, a cable, connection, or wall socket can be overloaded more heavily than the circuit breaker indicates.

A simple example:

  • The meter box supplies power to various devices on the circuit.
  • The home battery adds power at another point.
  • The devices use power from both directions.
  • Part of the wiring can therefore carry more current than expected.

Prolonged overload can lead to heat development in cables, contact points, or wall sockets. Therefore, higher power is only released when the battery has its own circuit used exclusively for the home battery.

What is a dedicated circuit for the home battery?

A dedicated circuit is a separate power circuit in the meter box to which no other sockets or appliances are connected. The entire circuit is then reserved for the home battery.

For the ZinVolt Power and ZinVolt Base, the connection for 2,000 W must meet these points:

  • The battery is connected to its own 16A circuit.
  • No other devices or sockets are connected to this circuit.
  • The socket is grounded and in good condition.
  • The battery is connected directly without an extension cord or power strip.
  • The circuit and connection are clearly identifiable in the meter box.

Always have a new circuit installed or checked by a qualified electrician. Do not open any parts of the fuse box yourself and do not remove covers to take photos.

Why does 2,000 W provide more convenience?

With a maximum of 800 W, the battery can largely cover the continuous base consumption of many homes. Think of a refrigerator, router, lighting, television, and other smaller appliances.

Electricity consumption quickly increases when multiple appliances are used simultaneously. Think of cooking, washing, drying, or using a dishwasher. With a maximum of 2,000 W, the ZinVolt Power or Base can supply a larger portion of the electricity consumption at such times.

A higher set power can help, among other things, to:

  • Use more stored solar power directly in the home
  • Draw less electricity from the grid during peak times
  • Respond more quickly to higher electricity consumption in the home
  • Better utilize the battery with dynamic energy tariffs

Higher power does not automatically mean more savings. The actual benefit depends on your energy consumption, solar panels, energy contract, and the times when the battery is used.

How to request 2,000 W in the ZinVolt app

Have you connected the ZinVolt Power or ZinVolt Base to its own 16A circuit? Then you can submit a request from the ZinVolt app to increase the maximum output.

  1. Open the ZinVolt app.
  2. Go to the dashboard.
  3. Tap the image of your home battery.
  4. Open Settings.
  5. Go to Maximum output.
  6. Try to move the slider to the right.

Cannot increase the power yet? Then the message ‘Feed in more than 800 W’ will appear.

Then follow these steps:

  1. In the message, tap More information.
  2. Read the information message about the required connection.
  3. Tap I want to feed in up to 2,000 W.
  4. Take the requested photos of the connection.
  5. Add a brief description of the situation.
  6. Check the details and submit the request.

Which photos should you include?

ZinVolt uses the photos to assess whether the battery is safely connected to a dedicated circuit. Ensure the situation is clearly visible.

In any case, take photos of:

  • The circuit to which the home battery is connected
  • The grounded socket of the home battery
  • The battery in its final location

In the description, state that the circuit is used exclusively for the home battery. Also mention when the circuit was installed or checked by an electrician.

Do not remove any covers from the fuse box. Do not touch any wiring and only take photos of parts that are normally visible and safely accessible.

What happens after your application?

After submission, ZinVolt checks the photos and description. We assess, among other things, whether the battery is connected to a dedicated circuit and whether the visible situation is suitable for higher power.

Has the application been approved? You will receive a confirmation by email. You can then increase the power in the app:

  1. Open the ZinVolt app.
  2. Tap your battery in the dashboard.
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Open Maximum output.
  5. Move the slider to a maximum of 2,000 W.

If the application is not approved, you will receive an explanation of what still needs to be adjusted or clarified. Only increase the power after ZinVolt has approved the connection.

How does this work with the ZinVolt Core?

The ZinVolt Core has a built-in inverter with a maximum of 3,680 W of power for charging and discharging. For most homes, we therefore recommend professional installation via a separate circuit and disconnect switch.

During a professional installation, the installer checks:

  • The available connection in the meter box
  • The chosen phase
  • The cables and protection
  • The placement and ventilation of the battery
  • The operation of the P1 dongle and ZinVolt app
  • The set power for charging and discharging

The disconnect switch makes it possible to locally and safely disconnect the battery from the electrical installation. This is important for maintenance, inspection, or a technical fault.

After installation, the installer ensures that the Core is correctly configured. With a suitable connection, the system can then charge and discharge a maximum of 3,680 W.

Can the ZinVolt Core also be connected plug & play?

Yes. The ZinVolt Core can also be connected to a suitable grounded wall socket. With this connection method, the maximum output is set to 800 W by default.

Do you want to use more power with a self-connected Core? Then you follow the same request process in the ZinVolt app:

  1. Open the battery from the dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Maximum output.
  4. Open the message about feeding in more than 800 W.
  5. Read the information and start the request.
  6. Add clear photos and a description.
  7. Submit the request for assessment.

ZinVolt will then assess which power can be safely released with the connection. For the full power of 3,680 W, we recommend professional installation via a disconnect switch.
